Sahara: Greece reaffirms support for Moroccan autonomy proposal

Greece reaffirms its support for the Moroccan proposal for autonomy, considering it "a serious and credible contribution to the ongoing process at the UN" and that it "could be the most viable solution" for the definitive resolution of the regional dispute over the Sahara. This position was expressed this Monday, September 7th, by the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, during a press statement following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, who is visiting Athens. Gerapetritis stated that, in accordance with the joint position of the European Union, Greece "fully supports the efforts made by the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to conduct negotiations, based on the Moroccan proposal for autonomy, aimed at achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution". In this context, the Greek Foreign Minister stressed that his country, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, "welcomes the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797." Through this support, Greece fully aligns itself with the international dynamic led by the Moroccan sovereign, King Mohammed VI, in favor of a definitive resolution to this regional dispute, based on the plan for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, and reinforces the consensus among the 27 Member States of the European Union regarding this approach.
