On Monday morning, several bus stops in Maputo, such as Xiquelene, saw unusually large crowds of passengers, following the circulation of messages on digital platforms announcing a supposed strike by public transport. The shortage of vehicles led to long lines and delays, causing disruption to commuters heading to work and school.
Naftal Lay, a spokesperson for the Maputo Municipal Police, denied any official strike, attributing the rumors to the discontent of some drivers penalized for irregular practices, such as shortening routes. Authorities appealed for calm and pledged increased surveillance to prevent potential acts of public disorder. In the city of Matola, a partial interruption of services was recorded early in the day.
