Rui Costa was re-elected president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica this Friday, obtaining 65.8% of the votes and clearly surpassing his opponents, among whom Noronha Lopes stood out.
His connection to the club's structure goes back a long way, dating back eight years. However, his history with the institution is much more extensive, having had a brilliant career as a footballer before taking on the role of sporting director in 2008.
Despite broad support from club members, his last term was not without challenges. On the sporting front, the club underperformed in the Champions League. Domestically, the football team lost its lead in the Portuguese league, first to FC Porto and more recently to Sporting, a fact that weighed heavily in the election debate. This re-election therefore represents the confidence of Benfica supporters in his project to lead the club back to victory.
