The girl who captivated the world by being born in a tree during the catastrophic floods of the Limpopo River in 2000, died this morning in the Chibuto district, a victim of illness.
Her story has become a powerful symbol of hope and resilience. In February 2000, while the raging waters of the Limpopo River flooded the region and caused the death of more than 790 people, her mother, Carolina Chirindza, took refuge in a tree to escape the current. It was there, amidst the tragedy, that Rosita came into the world, in a birth considered miraculous that went around the world.
The news of her passing was confirmed by the Administrator of the Chibuto district, Cacilda Banze. "It is with deep regret that we confirm the passing of Rosita Mabuiango," declared the official, adding that "local authorities are providing all necessary support to the family for the funeral ceremonies."
Rosita's life remains an indelible testament to human strength in the face of adversity, forever marking the collective memory of Mozambique and the world.
