RENMOZ 2026 highlights investment and partnerships as drivers of the energy transition in Mozambique

Maputo, June 12, 2026– Held on June 11th and 12th in Maputo, RENMOZ 2026 – the 5th Renewable Energy Business Conference in Mozambique – highlighted that the country's energy transition requires investment mobilization, active private sector participation, and the transformation of opportunities into concrete projects on the ground.

RENMOZ 2026 has reinforced its role as a platform for coordination between the public sector, the private sector and financiers, at a time when Mozambique is seeking to accelerate universal access to energy, expand generation and transmission capacity, boost off-grid solutions and consolidate itself as a strategic market for renewable energies.

The conference brought together representatives from the Government, public institutions, companies, investors, financial institutions and development partners, in an edition marked by announcements, agreements and concrete investment opportunities for the Mozambican energy sector.

With over 500 participants from 18 nationalities and 30 meetings, RENMOZ 2026 confirmed the growing mobilization around the sector. Business participation was particularly prominent, representing 45% of participants, followed by the Mozambican government and institutions with 39%, and financial institutions with 10%.

In the opening session, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, Estevão Pale, emphasized the importance of renewable energies in accelerating access to energy in the country and responding to climate challenges. “Achieving access to energy, industrializing the country, generating employment and increasing the competitiveness of the economy imply large investments, and to achieve these, the private sector occupies a central place in our vision for the country,” stated Estevão Pale.

The same message was reinforced by Ronald Münch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mozambique, who highlighted the importance of partnerships and the Team Europe approach to accelerate project implementation. “The focus of this RENMOZ agenda is to move from opportunity to concrete implementation, and partnerships are fundamental to this. Germany, as part of Team Europe, is committed to bringing together all actors in the energy sector in order to accelerate the realization of projects on the ground,” stated the diplomat.

“AMER believes that the best of Mozambique is still ahead of us. AMER will always stand alongside those who work to advance this sector.”Ricardo Pereira, President of AMER, pointed out, reinforcing his confidence in the potential of the Mozambican energy sector.

For Mayra Pereira, President of ALER, RENMOZ is seen as a space for decision-making and continuity, where dialogue should generate concrete results. "RENMOZ exists to create the conditions for decisions to be made, for conversations to continue after the conference, for the right actors to meet, and for the necessary trust for investment to be built," she stated.

Among the main announcements of the first day were the presentation of PROMIR-MZ, as well as the announcement of the launch of a tender for mini-grids in the second half of 2026. The Subsidiary Agreement – PURE was also signed, progress on the PROLER program was announced, and the financing agreement between ElectriFI and Source Energia was signed, aimed at supporting capital mobilization for renewable energy projects in Mozambique.

RENMOZ 2026 was also marked by the presentation of the 5th edition of the “Summary: Renewables in Mozambique”, a publication that systematizes the main data, advances, challenges and opportunities of the sector. The document confirms the country's strong potential, in a context where the electrification rate reached 66.4% in 2025, with the goal of achieving universal access by 2030.

Installed capacity is expected to more than triple, from approximately 2.9 GW in 2025 to around 9.5 GW in 2032, with renewable energy remaining the dominant component of electricity generation.

The need for capital mobilization remains, however, central. The Energy Transition Strategy estimates financing needs of US$18.6 billion by 2030 and over US$80 billion by 2050. Between 2013 and 2024, US$755 million was invested in renewable energy in Mozambique, but only 20% came from the private sector, highlighting the importance of risk mitigation instruments, structured financing, and greater involvement of private investors.

The business sessions provided an opportunity to present concrete opportunities in generation, transmission, mini-grids, productive energy uses, and clean cooking. EDM highlighted 16 generation projects and 11 transmission projects, totaling over US$4.6 billion. HCB presented strategic projects, including the new 1,245 MW North Power Plant, a 400 MW solar power plant, and the modernization of the South Power Plant, representing a set of opportunities exceeding US$3.1 billion.

In the area of mini-grids, opportunities associated with seven pre-clusters, 100 locations, and nine potential productive uses of energy were also highlighted, reinforcing the importance of off-grid solutions to accelerate access to energy in rural areas and support local economic activities.

On the second day, the conference featured sessions dedicated to unlocking investment for inclusive energy growth in Mozambique, regional energy cooperation among CPLP countries, and a simulated business forum. Also noteworthy was the National Biofuels Seminar 2026, organized by MIREME with technical support from GreenLight Africa. The seminar aimed to move from policy to implementation, discussing market development, investment mobilization, institutional coordination, financing, infrastructure, logistics, and the development of the biofuels value chain.

Organized by the Mozambican Renewable Energy Association (AMER) and ALER, in partnership with the European program GET.invest, funded by the European Union and Germany, RENMOZ 2026 benefited from the support of Mozambican authorities, the European Union and several international partners, within the framework of the Team Europe approach, as well as the strategic partnership of SNV.

At a time when Mozambique is seeking to accelerate universal access to energy, strengthen its generation and transmission capacity, boost the off-grid sector, and consolidate itself as a regional energy hub, RENMOZ 2026 stands out as a key platform for linking strategic vision, financing, and implementation.
