The potential departure of Ossufo Momade from the presidency of Renamo is gaining momentum behind the scenes, at a time considered critical for the party. This information was revealed by Hermínio Morais during a meeting of officials in Chimoio, Manica province, where the leadership succession is already under discussion.
Since taking office after the death of Afonso Dhlakama in 2018, Momade has faced internal criticism related to his leadership, difficulties in mobilization, and loss of political influence. Within the party, there are factions that advocate for renewal and others that prefer a more controlled transition, including concerns from the military wing regarding stability.
Although there are no official candidates, profiles for the succession are already being discussed, favoring figures with the ability to unite the party and recover its political strength vis-à-vis FRELIMO. Momade's eventual departure could either revitalize Renamo or exacerbate internal divisions, depending on how the process is conducted.
There are no dates or formal decisions yet, but the meeting in Chimoio could define the next steps, in a process that could mark an important turning point in the future of the main opposition force in Mozambique.
