The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, appealed this Thursday in Washington to the international community to strengthen its support for the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, during a high-level conference under the auspices of the United Nations.
In his speech, the Mozambican Head of State stressed that the terrorist threat in Cabo Delgado is not only a national problem, but a challenge to regional and global security. Chapo urged UN member states to intensify cooperation in information sharing, logistical support and combating the financing of terrorism.
Since 2017, extremist groups have carried out violent attacks in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, causing thousands of deaths and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. Despite military operations conducted by the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, with the support of Rwandan troops, the insurgents continue to carry out sporadic attacks, representing a persistent threat to the stability of the region.
Analysts note that since assuming the Presidency in January 2025, Daniel Chapo has placed the fight against terrorism and the resolution of the humanitarian crisis in the north of the country among his top priorities. His trip to Washington and his appeal at the United Nations demonstrate Maputo's intention to transform the fight against terrorism into a broader issue of international security, seeking to alleviate the military and financial burden on Mozambique.
To date, the United Nations has not released details about a concrete response to Mozambique's request. The issue is expected to be debated at upcoming Security Council sessions, where Mozambique is expected to present a detailed plan outlining its support needs.
President Chapo's appeal in Washington marks another step in Mozambican diplomacy in the search for lasting solutions to a conflict that has lasted almost a decade and continues to require a coordinated response among national, regional and international actors.
