A peaceful demonstration took place this morning on the Matola River, between Malhapswene and Mulotana, involving transporters and residents, due to the increase in transport prices. The situation, which threatened to escalate into a standoff, was resolved after the intervention of the neighborhood secretary, Joaquim Jaime Sendar.
According to information gathered on site, the impasse was resolved after the neighborhood secretary calmed tempers and convinced the transport operators to reinstate the previously charged fare, effective immediately.
A meeting has also been scheduled for next Tuesday, bringing together the leaders of each neighborhood, the Malhapswene transporters' association, and the neighborhood secretary, with the aim of assessing the situation and finding a definitive solution.
The demonstration proceeded peacefully. Despite the police presence, there was no need to use force, unlike what has been observed in several post-election events in Mozambique. The timely intervention of the neighborhood secretary was praised by the demonstrators, who are now awaiting the final verdict next Tuesday.
One of the protesters, who preferred not to be identified, highlighted the crucial role played by the neighborhood secretary in a society that, in recent times, has been marked by economic and financial crisis, creating environments that are hardly conducive to modern societies.
The situation on the Matola River reflects growing tensions surrounding the cost of living and transportation, in a context of economic hardship affecting a large part of the Mozambican population.
