Norway allocates $200 million to help flood victims in Mozambique

The Norwegian government today announced substantial financial support of $200 million to assist victims of the severe floods that struck the provinces of Maputo and Gaza in southern Mozambique. This contribution comes as an urgent humanitarian response to the devastation caused by the storms.

The funds, channeled through bilateral cooperation mechanisms and humanitarian agencies, will primarily focus on providing immediate relief to the affected populations. Specifically, the funds will be directed towards providing food, drinking water, health kits, and emergency shelters for thousands of displaced families. In parallel, a significant portion of the amount will be allocated to the recovery of damaged critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and health facilities, aiming to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.

Floods resulting from persistent torrential rains have inundated vast agricultural areas and communities, exacerbating food insecurity and public health risks. In this context, Norwegian support aims to complement the efforts of the Mozambican government and other organizations on the ground. It is important to highlight that the aid was closely coordinated with national authorities to ensure that resources effectively address the most pressing needs identified locally.

Beyond emergency aid, the package also includes components geared towards long-term resilience. In other words, funding is planned for more robust reconstruction projects and disaster preparedness, with the aim of mitigating the impact of similar climate events in the future. This approach reflects an integrated vision that combines immediate response with disaster risk reduction.

In a statement, the Norwegian Ambassador to Mozambique emphasized: "This assistance is a sign of our strong partnership and commitment to the Mozambican people during times of great adversity. We are committed to helping alleviate human suffering and supporting the reconstruction of affected communities."

With this large-scale financial support, Norway is positioning itself as a key partner in responding to this calamity, offering crucial relief to thousands of Mozambicans and contributing to the complex recovery efforts in the southern provinces. In the short term, the absolute priority remains saving lives and stabilizing the humanitarian situation.
