Washington, DC – In a significant step toward strengthening health resilience, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for bilateral cooperation in health between the United States and Mozambique was formalized today. The signing ceremony was attended by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Mozambique's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Ussene Hilário Isse.
The five-year agreement falls under the "America First" Global Health Strategy. Within this framework, the U.S. State Department, in collaboration with Congress, plans to provide **up to $1.8 billion** to boost health advancements in Mozambique.
The funds will be channeled towards expanding innovative solutions, such as HIV/AIDS prevention medication, and strengthening efforts to combat malaria. Simultaneously, Mozambique commits to increasing its domestic health expenditure by approximately 30% as a percentage of the government budget over the same period.
This joint investment aims at common strategic objectives: improving maternal, neonatal and child health care and eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. The partnership thus intends to create a lasting impact on Mozambican public health.
The signing of this memorandum underscores the bilateral commitment to building a more resilient and effective health system in Mozambique, understood as a fundamental pillar for global health security. In line with the "America First" strategy vision, this cooperation demonstrates how U.S. innovation and leadership can catalyze critical advances in health, benefiting both the Mozambican population and the international community.
The State Department emphasizes that this initiative reinforces its continued success in promoting advancements that protect populations and strengthen capabilities to respond to health threats worldwide.
