Medical association denounces the exclusion of more than 600 newly graduated professionals from the national health system

The Mozambican Medical Association (AMM) expressed deep concern about the situation of health professionals in the country, warning that more than 600 newly graduated doctors remain outside the National Health System (SNS), at a time when several health units are facing a shortage of human resources.

According to the organization, the lack of formal employment for these professionals represents a serious challenge to strengthening health services, especially in rural and peripheral areas, where the shortage of doctors continues to affect the population's access to medical care.

The AMM considers it contradictory that hundreds of doctors complete their training and remain unemployed, while hospitals and health centers report a shortage of clinical staff to meet the growing demand for health services.

According to the association, many of these young professionals face economic difficulties and uncertainty about the future of their careers after years of demanding academic training. Some have been waiting for several months for public competitions or mechanisms for integration into the state apparatus.

“We are facing a worrying situation. The country needs more doctors in hospitals and health centers, but hundreds of professionals continue to have no opportunity to practice their profession in the public sector,” the association said in a statement.

The organization advocates for the need for a national strategy that allows for the absorption of doctors trained by different higher education institutions, ensuring the utilization of available human resources and improving the quality of medical care provided to the population.

However, health experts warn that the shortage of professionals continues to be one of the main obstacles to the efficient functioning of health units. In several provinces, users face long waiting times for appointments, overworked professionals, and limitations in medical coverage.

The Mozambican Medical Association is calling on the Government to accelerate the hiring processes and create conditions for the integration of newly graduated doctors, stressing that investment in medical training must be accompanied by effective recruitment and retention policies.

In a context where the country continues to face challenges in the health sector, the organization considers that valuing professionals and including them in the National Health System are fundamental measures to guarantee more efficient care that is closer to the communities.
