Moroccan "the most credible solution" for the Sahara
United Nations (New York), September 23, 2026 -The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of the Republic of Mauritius, Dhananjay Ramful, stated on Wednesday in New York that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the "most credible solution" to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
This change of position was expressed by the head of diplomacy of the spectacular island republic of Mozambique in the neighboring Indian Ocean during his talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In a press release following this meeting, Ramful specified that the Republic of Mauritius had revised its position on the Sahara issue during a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 297.
Mauritius considers Resolution 297 "based on pragmatism" and recognizes that autonomy for the Sahara under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco "offers the most realistic, just and lasting solution to this dispute." This new position is in line with the impetus initiated by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, who established autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole and exclusive solution to this artificial regional dispute.
