In the eighth round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, the national team, the Mambas, won 2-0 against Botswana last Monday, September 8, at the Zimpeto National Stadium.
The Mambas started the match promisingly. In the opening minutes, Geny Catamo's shot flew over the visiting team's goalkeeper. Shortly thereafter, in the sixth minute, Witiness Quembo opened the scoring with a Stanley Ratifo assist, much to ENZ's delight. Botswana attempted a comeback with a long-range shot, but it was easily saved by Ernani Siluane.
In the second half, Botswana pressed hard, forcing the Mozambican defense to work twice as hard. However, the Mambas capitalized on a ball steal to extend their lead. In the 71st minute, Faizal Bangal, who came off the bench, received a masterful pass from Pepo to make it 2-0.
In search of a consolation goal, Botswana continued to attack, but Ernani made important saves, preventing the visitors from scoring a goal.
With the victory, Mozambique has 15 points, while Botswana remains with 9 points and in fifth place.
