Inhambane: Arsénia Massingue mourns the death of 24 people in an accident on the N1 highway

The Council of Provincial State Representation Services of Inhambane expresses its deep sorrow and dismay at the death of 24 people in a road accident that occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 18, on National Road Number 1 (N1), in the district of Zavala.

In a statement of condolence, the Secretary of State for the Province of Inhambane, Arsénia Felicidade Félix Massingue, on behalf of the Council of Provincial State Representation Services, extends her deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expresses solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy.

The governor also wishes a speedy recovery to the two people who suffered minor injuries in the accident. In the same context, Arsénia Massingue appeals to drivers to observe and respect traffic rules in order to contribute to the prevention of accidents and avoid further loss of life.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning on the N1 highway in Helene, Zavala district, and involved a passenger van and a truck belonging to the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM). According to provincial authorities, the two vehicles collided head-on, with the van traveling north to south and the truck traveling in the opposite direction, south to north.

Of the total number of fatalities, 17 died at the scene of the accident and another seven died en route to the hospital. Given the scale of the tragedy, the Council of Provincial State Representation Services of Inhambane created a Management Committee to monitor the situation, in coordination with the Government of Sofala.
