Six brothers were arrested by the Mozambican Police in the city of Beira, Sofala province, after torturing and causing the death of their 43-year-old sister, Helena Chutale. The crime, which occurred in the Munhava neighborhood, was allegedly instigated by a healer, whose identity is still unknown, who convinced them that their sister was responsible for the family's misfortunes.
According to the victim's daughter, her mother was tied up, subjected to hot vapors, and physically assaulted under pressure to confess to being a witch. The violent scene occurred in front of the victim's two sons, aged 17 and 12. After the attack, it was the sons themselves who managed to rescue their mother and take her to Beira Central Hospital, where she died hours later.
The case sparked widespread outrage in the community. Several neighborhood residents went to the 4th PRM Police Station, demanding justice and accountability for the attackers. The brothers are now in police custody while efforts are underway to locate the healer involved.
Local authorities call for an end to persecution motivated by superstitious beliefs and reinforce their commitment to defending human rights and life. The case is being monitored by civil society organizations that provide support to children and families affected by domestic violence and unfounded accusations of witchcraft.
