A fatal accident involving two large trucks occurred on Tuesday morning on National Highway Number 4 (EN4), at kilometer 34.6, just past the Moamba tollbooth, in Maputo province. The accident resulted in one death and one serious injury.
According to preliminary information from the Traffic Police, the accident was caused by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel. A Scania truck, traveling from Maputo to Ressano Garcia, crossed into the opposite lane and collided head-on with another truck traveling in the opposite direction, towards Maputo.
The impact of the collision was so violent that it caused the instant death of the Scania truck driver. The driver of the other heavy vehicle was rescued in serious condition and transported to a local hospital.
The accident partially blocked the road, causing long traffic jams on a stretch that is normally very busy with freight and passenger vehicles. Authorities were forced to intervene to manage the situation.
Emergency teams and traffic police quickly arrived at the scene to coordinate the rescue, remove the vehicles, and restore traffic flow.
Taking advantage of the occasion, the Traffic Police reiterated their appeal to all drivers, especially those traveling long distances, to adopt prudent driving practices and take regular breaks in order to avoid accidents caused by fatigue.
