The resumption of operations at the Maragra sugar mill, located in Manhiça, Maputo province, has been postponed due to the impacts of the recent floods that hit southern Mozambique.
The company's nursery and sugarcane fields were initially submerged by the intense rains that battered the region. Furthermore, the situation was aggravated by the continuous discharge of water from South African dams through the Incomati River.
According to company sources, the reactivation of the industrial unit was planned for this year. However, the destruction of agricultural infrastructure and sugarcane fields may now jeopardize this ambition of the group.
Thus, Maragra is forced to reassess its plans while waiting for the waters to recede in order to conduct a full assessment of the damage and draw up a new timetable for the long-awaited restart.
