ECA Students Win African University Theatre Festival

With a minimalist yet dramatically intense staging, students Delfim Gatoma and Hermelinda Zimba, from the 4th year of the Theatre degree program at the School of Communication and Arts (ECA), won the Best Theatre Production award at the first edition of the African University Theatre Festival, held in Algeria. The duo captivated the jury with the play Neo, Three Panels of Apocalypse, by the French playwright Jean Pierre Sarrazac, exceeding expectations and logistical challenges to bring Mozambique's name to the podium.

The event, which took place on July 13th and 20th at the second largest theater in the Algerian city, brought together specialists and professors from Sudan, Togo, Niger, and various universities in Algeria. For ECA, participation represented an important milestone, as the performance of the play Neo, Three Panels of Apocalypse was the culmination of a collective effort that overcame limitations of time and resources.

In this sense, the team opted for a simple yet extremely functional set design, which proved to be the right choice. Under the direction of Professor Dadivo José, the actors focused on the performance to convey the fragmented and disoriented state of the characters. To this end, the director used innovative techniques for assembling and disassembling sets, going beyond conventional methods of spatial design and vividly combining the functionality of the performance with the depth of the staging.

As a result, the show was unanimously praised by the jury, who highlighted the creativity and dedication of the actors. At the award ceremony, Delfim Gatoma and Hermelinda Zimba expressed their deep gratitude, emphasizing that the distinction symbolizes the unconditional support given by the directors, technicians, and the educational institution itself.

In turn, the event's host emphasized the importance of the initiative in promoting the performing arts in Africa. He stated that the festival not only stimulates creativity but also values ​​academic theatre as a powerful means of reflection, education, and social contribution, since the plays presented interpret contemporary phenomena in the social, environmental, political, and technological spheres.

Thus, the African University Theatre Festival kicks off with flying colors in its first edition, establishing itself as a vital platform for the promotion and appreciation of performing arts in the academic context and proving that Mozambican talent has a prominent place in the continent's cultural landscape.
