Internal turmoil within Renamo continues to take on new dimensions. António Muchanga, a former member of parliament and influential figure in the party, has once again demanded the immediate resignation of Renamo's president, Ossufo Momade, whom he directly holds responsible for the serious crisis shaking the largest political force in the Mozambican opposition.
Muchanga, who had been suspended indefinitely from the party ranks, managed to reverse the decision through the courts. The Maputo City Judicial Court ruled in his favor, suspending the decision of the Renamo Jurisdictional Council and paving the way for his return to political activity within the organization.
During a meeting held on Saturday with Renamo members in Zambézia province, Muchanga accused the current leadership of compromising the historical legacy left by Afonso Dhlakama, the party's former leader.
“The divisions that are weakening Renamo today are a consequence of the current leadership's inability to guide the organization's destiny. Several attempts to resolve the problems through internal mechanisms have failed and have not produced satisfactory results,” he stated, as quoted by the newspaper O País.
According to Muchanga, the main objective of the meeting was to assess the party's internal situation and seek ways to reorganize and strengthen it. The politician also accused Ossufo Momade's leadership of adopting repressive practices against members who express dissenting opinions.
"The current leadership has responded with repressive measures against those who think differently, contributing to the worsening of tensions and internal conflicts," he stated.
Once considered the main opposition force in Mozambique, Renamo is currently facing a period of great political and organizational instability. Analysts point out that the party has been losing influence on the national scene, being increasingly challenged by the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), led by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
