Cards that bring Mozambicans closer to the world

Absa's campaign takes clients to Mauritius and highlights the benefits and international experiences associated with using its cards.

Paying for a purchase with a card in Mozambique is starting to mean more than just completing a transaction. As the national financial market evolves and becomes more connected to international solutions and networks, customers are also gaining access to benefits, programs, and experiences that, for a long time, were more associated with more mature financial markets.

It is in this context that clients from different segments of Absa Bank Mozambique, from Maputo and Moatize in Tete province, are having an international experience in Mauritius, after being selected as winners of an Absa Visa Card campaign.

The initiative transformed a simple everyday gesture – using a card to pay for purchases – into the possibility of living an international experience. Each winner will travel with a person of their choice, in an experience that includes accommodation, leisure activities, and other small comforts such as access to international airport lounges.

More than just rewarding customers, the campaign highlights a significant shift in how bank cards are perceived in Mozambique. Security, convenience, and speed remain essential, but they now coexist with benefits, partnerships, recognition programs, and experiences associated with their use.

This evolution reflects the transformation of the payments ecosystem in the country, driven by investments in digitalization, security, interoperability, and modernization of financial infrastructures.

For Denise Cruz, Director of Personal and Private Banking at Absa Bank Mozambique, this transformation is also raising customer expectations regarding their banks: “A card should no longer be seen merely as a way to make payments. Our customers are increasingly connected to the world and expect solutions that keep pace with this evolution. We want them to have access, from Mozambique, not only to simple and secure ways to pay, but also to benefits, partnerships, and experiences that add value to their day-to-day choices.”

It was precisely one of these everyday choices that brought the winners here. The campaign invited customers to use their Absa Visa Debit or Credit Cards for their purchases, turning eligible transactions into entries in the draw.

During the awards ceremony, the winners shared their surprise at seeing regular card use result in such a significant experience and spoke of the trust they maintain in their relationship with the Bank.

Behind these benefits lies what customers expect above all from a card: the ability to use it simply, quickly, and securely. To guarantee this experience, Absa has been continuously investing in the technology, security, and reliability of the systems that support each transaction.

"Whenever a customer uses an Absa card, whether to make a purchase, pay for a service, or carry out a transaction abroad, there is a great deal of work behind the scenes to ensure that this experience is simple, fast, and secure. Trust is earned every day, in every transaction.""explains Akila Ghumra, Director of Operations at Absa Bank Mozambique."

Investment in technology, security, and reliability allows customers to use their cards in Mozambique and abroad and access the benefits available through the Visa network. It is also part of a broader transformation of the Mozambican financial market, where the banking experience is progressively approaching internationally available standards and possibilities.

According to Absa, this evolution presents a new challenge for banks: to compete not only for the transaction itself, but for the value they can add before, during, and after it.

For the winners of the campaign, this evolution has a very concrete expression: an experience that began in Mozambique, stemmed from an everyday purchase, and took them all the way to Mauritius.
