Bulgaria considers that "genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution" to the Sahara issue. This position was expressed in a statement released after a telephone conversation held on Tuesday, July 28, between the Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Velislava Petrova-Chamova, and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
In light of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, "Bulgaria recognizes that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution to the dispute," the statement said.
The document further emphasizes that "Bulgaria reaffirms that it considers the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco in 2007 as a serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution" to the Sahara issue.
This position is part of the strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Bulgaria and illustrates the international dynamic driven by King Mohammed VI of Morocco, which has generated increasing support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsed the Moroccan autonomy plan.
