Bio Card: a sustainable choice that protects nature

Launched by Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI), in partnership with the Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation (BIOFUND), the Bio Card is a financial solution that combines convenience with environmental commitment. Since its introduction, environmental education initiatives, conservation projects in protected areas and other sustainability programs have been promoted with the support of the revenue generated through this payment method, actively contributing to the preservation of biodiversity and the well-being of the beneficiary communities.

Made from biodegradable corn-based material, this payment method was the first card of its kind in the country and represents a concrete response to environmental challenges, promoting responsibility and ecological citizenship.

The resources generated have made it possible to support and expand environmental projects, including the protection of endangered species such as rhinos and sea turtles. Among the initiatives supported are the conservation of Raphia australis in the Bobole Botanical Reserve, the monitoring of turtle migration routes in the Environmental Protection Area of ​​the Primeiras and Segundas Islands, as well as the revitalization of the Botanical Garden of Eduardo Mondlane University.

The Bio card also contributes to supporting actions developed in the Banhine National Park, considered strategic on the route of Eurasian migratory birds, as well as in the districts of Cheringoma and Muanza, in the generation of employment.

These actions highlight the impact of the Bio Card, which goes beyond its everyday banking use. It is, therefore, an instrument of environmental and social intervention, with concrete contributions to the preservation of biodiversity and the well-being of communities. “More than a means of payment, the Bio Card is a commitment by BCI to the sustainable future of Mozambique”, says Francisco Costa, Chairman of the BCI Executive Committee. “Each transaction represents a concrete step towards the preservation of our biodiversity. This partnership with BIOFUND is proof that collaborative initiatives can generate lasting results for the common good.”

The actions resulting from the use of the BIO card are part of the Bank's efforts, which has environmental sustainability as one of its strategic pillars. By encouraging the adoption of conscious practices, BCI assumes its active role in building a greener, more resilient and balanced country.
