A tragic incident shook residents of the 25 de Junho neighborhood in Maputo city, after a bee attack resulted in the death of an elderly woman and injuries to several others, including children. The victim was returning from church when she was surprised by the insects, and was violently attacked without being able to escape.
According to residents, the hives belonged to a former beekeeper who lived in the area but left, leaving the bees in the care of a neighbor. She had been warned several times to remove the hives due to the risk they posed. Residents are now demanding legal action, alleging negligence on the part of the owner. "Bees should be kept in the woods, not in residential areas. We've already asked her to remove them before the worst happens," vented one angry resident. Authorities were called to the scene to control the situation and investigate.
