The literary career of Mozambican writer and poet Sónia Sultuane was highlighted on Tuesday, October 6th, at the Camões – Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo, during another edition of "Writer of the Month," an initiative in partnership with BCI.
The meeting brought together writers, analysts, reciters, representatives of the artistic and cultural community, and lovers of arts and literature, among other guests, and took on particular significance as it took place in the year that Sónia Sultuane celebrates 25 years since the launch of her first book.
The presentation of the author's career was given by the writer Eduardo Quive, in a session also marked by the reading of poems, testimonials, and an open dialogue about literature, creation, and literary life.
In an atmosphere of closeness and sharing, Sónia Sultuane revisited memories, spoke of references, of the people who marked her journey and those who contributed to the publication of her works. She spoke of authors, books and the richness of national literary creation. "We have a beautiful literature," she stated.
Speaking at the event, BCI's Central Marketing Director, Ana Zara Fateally, highlighted the honoree's uniqueness, stating that "talking about Sónia means accepting that it will be difficult to encapsulate her in a single word, in a single definition."
Referring to the Bank's support, he emphasized: “The initiative to promote and discuss the work of relevant writers of the Portuguese language, encouraging reading and literary dialogue, finds in BCI a partner naturally aligned with this purpose. Because we believe that a country is also built through books, its stories, its memory, and those who give it voice.”
Ana Zara Fateally also recalled the long-standing relationship between BCI and the author, which dates back to the launch of "Dreams" in 2001, and includes other moments such as the exhibition "Pancho: Other Forms and Perspectives" in 2019, and the launch of "The Place of the Islands" at the BCI Auditorium in 2021.
By partnering with "Writer of the Month," BCI reaffirms its commitment to promoting Mozambican literature, arts, and creators, recognizing culture as an essential element for preserving identity and memory and for the country's development.
