BCI joins hundreds of cyclists for a more sustainable Maputo

Bicycles took over the streets, enthusiasm set the pace and an expressive human backdrop gave a special color to the city. More than 1,500 cyclists participated, on Sunday (16), in the 2nd edition of Maputo Pedalando, an initiative of the Maputo Municipal Council which once again had the support of BCI.

Among athletes, families, groups of friends, and cycling enthusiasts, the event transformed some of the capital's main thoroughfares into a grand stage for socializing and promoting sustainable mobility. Participants tackled routes of 10, 50, and 65 kilometers between the city and the province of Maputo, in an initiative that encourages the use of bicycles as an alternative mode of transport and promotes healthier lifestyles.

Present at the event, the President of the Executive Committee of BCI, José Furtado, highlighted the scope of the initiative: “Maputo Pedalando represents much more than a bicycle ride. It represents a different way of experiencing the city, where sustainable mobility, health, inclusion and coexistence go hand in hand.” He also emphasized that “the bicycle is a simple and enjoyable way to maintain healthier lifestyle habits.”

For his part, the President of the Maputo Municipal Council, Razaque Manhique, highlighted the importance of combining efforts to realize the city's aspirations. “It is important that we develop these activities, always collectively. The Municipal Council alone will not be able to do everything we dream of. Let's walk together so that our city can materialize,” he stated.

The event culminated in the awarding of prizes to the athletes who excelled in the men's and women's categories, a moment of celebration of merit, overcoming challenges, and sportsmanship.

A partner of Maputo Pedalando since its inception, BCI is once again joining an initiative that combines sustainability, health, citizenship, and quality of life. This support takes on particular significance this year, as it is part of the Bank's 30th-anniversary celebrations, also marked by actions that reinforce its close ties with communities and its commitment to a more sustainable future.

For three decades, BCI has sought to make proximity and trust the starting points for supporting initiatives capable of generating value for society. In Maputo Pedalando, this commitment gained wheels, movement, and an entire city as its backdrop.
