The Archbishop of Maputo and vice-president of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique (CEM), Dom João Carlos, demands swift investigation into the assassination of the Bishop of Quelimane, Dom Osório Citora Afonso, who was shot dead at his residence on June 6th.
Quoted by the newspaper Carta de Moçambique, the prelate maintains that only a full clarification of the facts will stop speculation. “It is the truth that we want. What actually happened there in that house, on that day,” stated Dom João Carlos, adding that the Catholic Church awaits the results of the investigation with anticipation.
Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, 54, was shot inside the episcopal residence under circumstances still under investigation. For Bishop João Carlos, the location of the crime exacerbates the concern: “If it had happened on the road, we could look at it differently. But now, even in his own house, it happened there, there’s a gun, there was a shot fired,” he lamented.
