General Mussa’s death creates setback in the SDS

The novel chief of the General Staff, General Eugénio Mussa, lost his life as a result of illness, at a time when the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) were giving new life, more concentrated in the North operational theater, facing the attacks terrorists, where he had been a leader.

The Mozambican Ministry of Defense announced last Monday, in a statement, the death of the chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Armed Defense Forces, Eugénio Mussa, less than a month after taking office.

In the note, the Ministry of National Defense does not indicate the causes of the death of Eugénio Mussa, 63, but we find that he was hospitalized with symptoms of Covid-19.

The military was appointed chief of the General Staff on January 14 this year by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, having been promoted to general shortly before being appointed to the post. In his lifetime, General Eugénio Mussa performed many functions in the armed forces of Mozambique, with emphasis on the appointment of commander of the northern part of the country in March 2019, to lead the fight against terrorism in the northern operational theater, especially in the province of Cabo Delgado.

Analysts said at the time of the nomination that Eugénio Mussa was seen by the head of state as a key player in containing the advance of the armed groups that carry out attacks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, due to his role as commander of the “Operational Theater Norte ”, before becoming Chief of the General Staff.

Armed violence in Cabo Delgado is causing a humanitarian crisis with more than two thousand deaths and more than half a million displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba, but also in other neighboring provinces.

It should be noted that insurgent incursions have been claimed by the Islamic State ‘jihadist’ group since 2019, hence the international community and national authorities call them terrorist attacks.
